Business energy use: Asking the right questions

Businesswoman

Energy is an important resource for your business. Are you making the most of it? While there may be no simple answer, you can start by looking at your facility and energy-using systems and asking these questions.

HVAC

  • Are thermostats adjusted to save energy when the building is unoccupied? Smart thermostats optimize savings and convenience by automatically adjusting building temperatures based on your operating schedule. They also provide cool features, such as remote control.
  • Do you have a regular inspection and maintenance program in place? Annual cleaning and inspection by a qualified professional is essential to optimizing system performance.
  • Has your heating or cooling system been updated in recent years? Older systems may not be very efficient or provide optimal comfort. Newer HVAC technologies provide highly efficient year-round heating and cooling, humidity control and comfort.
  • Is the HVAC system sized to fit your current needs? Over time, building renovations or changing occupancy patterns can lead to an improperly sized HVAC system, which can waste energy and create comfort issues. Check with a qualified professional about sizing a new system that fits your business needs.

Lighting

  • Are you using the most energy-efficient lighting options available? LEDs are the most efficient lighting technology available. Affordable LED replacement options are available for widely used fluorescent tube lamps and incandescent bulbs.
  • Are lights often left on in empty spaces? Unnecessary lighting is a big waste of energy. Install occupancy or vacancy sensors in areas of varying occupancy to optimize lighting use and save money.
  • Are you making effective use of natural lighting? Daylight is free and can help create a comfortable and productive work environment. Use photosensors and dimming controls to take advantage of this no-cost resource.

Building envelope

  • Is your building well-insulated? If your building is older, it may be poorly insulated, which can waste energy and reduce comfort. Hire a qualified insulation contractor to inspect your building and assess your insulation needs.
  • Are there cracks around doors and windows? Air escaping through gaps can make your HVAC system work harder and create hot and cold spots. Inspect windows and exterior doors for leaks and seal any you find with caulk or weatherstripping.

Plugged-in devices

  • Are devices drawing power when not in use? Many appliances and electronic devices draw power unnecessarily when they're not in use. Plug these devices into advanced power strips or smart plugs, which automatically cut power to unused devices.
  • Are sleep settings enabled on computers and office equipment? Power management or "sleep" settings can help reduce or eliminate standby power on these devices.
