Energy Awareness Month: Take action now

Businesswoman

October is National Energy Awareness Month, a nationwide effort to highlight how important conserving energy is to our prosperity, security and the health of our planet. You can do your part by taking action now to implement these simple conservation measures and low-cost energy-saving upgrades in your business.

Energy conservation measures

These simple operational changes can make a big difference in your energy bills. They're easy to implement and won't cost you a dime.

  • Shut off lights in empty rooms or occupied spaces when natural daylight is sufficient.
  • Adjust building temperatures to avoid wasting energy and money to keep empty spaces comfortable.
  • Implement power management "sleep" settings on all computers and office equipment.
  • Network printers and copiers so that multiple employees share one. It will save energy and reduce equipment costs and paper use.
  • Limit the use of personal appliances, such as space heaters and fans, by maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature.
  • If you have kitchen operations, keep pots and pans covered while cooking to avoid wasting energy. Turn down or shut off cooking equipment during idle periods and clean equipment daily. Keep refrigerator doors closed and wait until you have a full load before running your dishwasher.

Simple upgrades

These small energy-saving investments can help you save a lot.

  • Install a smart programmable thermostat to optimize savings and comfort. Most models provide advanced features, such as remote control and self-programming.
  • Upgrade linear fluorescent lamps to LEDs. LED lamps are more efficient, last longer and provide better quality light. Simple replacement lamps are available that can fit right into the existing fixtures.
  • Install occupancy or vacancy sensors in meeting rooms, restrooms and other areas with varying occupancy.
  • Seal gaps in windows and exterior doors with caulk or weatherstripping.
  • Upgrade computers and office equipment to ENERGY STARĀ®-certified models. ENERGY STAR office equipment uses less energy than standard products.
  • Plug electrical devices into advanced power strips, which automatically shut off power to unused equipment.

Consider a business energy audit. An energy professional will inspect your facility and provide customized energy-saving recommendations. By being more aware of your energy use, you can take steps to save this month and every month.
